Girls’ Night at Joann Fabrics — What the Nerds Do on Friday Night

A couple weeks ago, I got an invitation in my inbox to a party at Joann Fabrics.  A free party.  With free food and free craft stuff.  And so of course, I sent it to my little sister Lauren and my friend Kelsey too.  So last Friday night, we went to a party… the fabric store. Yes, we did.

This is my dear sister waiting to me to finish primping so we could hit the thrift store before the party.

I did pin curls with my new little clips I bought.  They didn’t stay put very long because we didn’t have time to let it dry all the way, but it was fun anyway.

We hit the thrift store and scored some good buys — I got two shirts, an Ann Taylor sundress, and a really cute skirt all for $10. Which reminds me, I need to pay La back.

There was a long line, so we amused ourselves by taking pictures and congratulating ourselves on our nerdy Friday night activities.

Inside, they had a lot of little “stations” where you could make crafts.  The first station we stopped at was to learn to make earrings. I already knew how, but I wasn’t going to pass up free earrings! And Lauren and Kelsey got to learn.

Then we tried out a fabric cutter.  You push buttons and it cuts out little flowers (or whatever you want it to cut out) all by itself.  Pretty nifty.

Kelsey demonstrates her finished product — a headband.

I evaluate my selections to see how they look —

— and I think that maybe I should have picked a different pattern.  Oh well.

The food was fantastic. They had sourdough bread, homemade pimento cheese and chicken salad, chips, four kinds of cookies, fruit tea, lemonade, fruit salad……okay, I’m making myself hungry.

Here we are, full of nice food and loaded down with freebies.

And here’s the loot! (Howie was not part of the loot, but he deemed it his duty to inspect it thoroughly.)  I got a lot of coupons — a celebrity from Project Runway was there, and he was handing out coupons.  I think he was bored and was given too many coupons. But hey, I’m not complaining!  My favorite prizes were the scissors and the silk scarf.  (We were supposed to decorate the scarves, but I didn’t want to deface mine with puff paint, so I left it as it was.)

So if Joann’s ever has a party in your area, go!  It’s definitely worth your while.

About Charity

I have an inexcusable number of cookbooks (and like to experiment with them), have worked in architectural antiques, and have been sewing most of my life. I recently graduated with a Ph.D. in Apparel, Merchandising, & Design from Iowa State University. Doing household things (except for cleaning!) and hunting for antiques are my favorite pastimes.
